The Foundational Five
Creatine Monohydrate
One of the most extensively studied supplements for improving high-intensity exercise capacity, strength, and lean mass gains when combined with resistance training.
EVIDENCE: STRONG — EXERCISE PERFORMANCEPrioritize plain creatine monohydrate from a reputable manufacturer with independent quality testing. Typical maintenance intake: 3–5 grams daily.
Protein Supplementation
A convenient way to meet protein requirements when dietary intake is insufficient, especially during resistance training, calorie restriction, or increased recovery demands.
EVIDENCE: STRONG — ADEQUATE PROTEIN INTAKEChoose a complete protein source with clear ingredient labeling and verified quality. Whole foods remain the foundation; supplements help fill nutritional gaps.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
EPA and DHA support normal physiology. Supplemental omega-3s can lower triglycerides, although cardiovascular outcomes vary by formulation and patient population.
EVIDENCE: STRONG — TRIGLYCERIDE LOWERINGLook for verified EPA/DHA content, oxidation controls, and contaminant testing. Over-the-counter supplements are not interchangeable with prescription therapies.
Magnesium
An essential mineral involved in neuromuscular function, energy metabolism, and numerous enzyme reactions. Supplementation is most relevant when intake is inadequate.
EVIDENCE: STRONG — CORRECTING INADEQUATE INTAKEEvaluate elemental magnesium per serving, formulation, and tolerability. Dramatic sleep or testosterone improvement claims require stronger evidence.
Vitamin D
Essential for calcium regulation and bone health. Supplementation is valuable in appropriate individuals, but routine high-dose use has not consistently improved broad outcomes in people without deficiency.
EVIDENCE: STRONG — DEFICIENCY MANAGEMENTIndividualize dosing based on risk factors, dietary intake, and clinical context. Higher vitamin D levels do not necessarily translate into better health outcomes.
EVIDENCE OVER HYPE
Quality Matters. Context Matters More.
No supplement replaces a strong foundation of nutrition, training, sleep, and appropriate medical care. We evaluate supplements by ingredient quality, dosing, independent testing, value, and the strength of evidence supporting their intended use.
